Dear Supporter,

We are very fortunate to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  I grew up hiking, climbing and fishing across Washington, and the preservation of our natural resources and wild landscapes is a central theme to my campaign.  We must be vigilant if we want to preserve our environment for future generations.  While there are many environmental priorities, this email is dedicated to two important issues:

  • Stopping Global Warming, and
  • Saving Puget Sound

I am honored to have earned the sole endorsement of both The Sierra Club and Washington Conservation Voters as the strongest environmental candidate in my race for my leadership and committment to protecting our environment here in Washington.

Global Warming - Now is the time for Action!

Simply put, climate change is one of the greatest challenges we will face.  Yet this challenge also presents us with opportunities to create new economic markets and sustainable practices in all aspects of life.  In pursuit of these goals, the Western Climate Initiative recently announced the design for its innovative market-based cap-and-trade system to limit greenhouse gases.  The coalition consists of seven western states (representing roughly 20 percent of the U.S. economy) and four Canadian provinces.  Washington's participation helps position us as a leader on this issue. This is an important step in pushing Congress towards a federal climate program.  Click here to read the article in the Seattle P-I

As your State Representative I will work with Governor Gregoire, legislative colleagues, citizens and environmental organizations to address the global climate challenge by:

This is just the beginning.  The climate challenge is something that we all need to consider and address--on a local, national and global level--in the years ahead.  My committment is to work with you to develop solutions to this problem!

Saving Puget Sound - Together, we can do it!

By providing critical habitat for so many species and great recreational opportunities for Washingtonians, there is no doubt that Puget Sound is the crown jewel of our region.  However, we must take action if we are to save this critical ecosystem before it is too late!

As your State Representative I will work with Governor Gregoire, legislative colleagues, citizens and environmental organizations to save Puget Sound by:
  • Fully funding the Puget Sound Partnership so we can implement the new "Action Agenda" to clean up Puget Sound by 2020.
  • Strengthening local planning requirements under the Growth Management Act (GMA) and State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) to help manage stormwater runoff.
  • Strengthen pollution control efforts to reduce toxic pollutants from entering this waterway.
  • Introducing and passing legislation that will protect Maury Island from a proposed mining operation. (Contrary to some claims, I lobbied as a citizen for the protection of Maury Island this past legislative session--the only candidate in my race to do so!)

The Puget Sound region is projected to receive an additional 1.8 million people in the coming decades.  Only through thoughtful planning and working together will we be able to maintain our quality of life and preserve our natural environment for future generations!

In addition to climate change and saving Puget Sound, there are many other environmental priorities that we must also pursue in the years ahead.  Protecting our parks, forests and farmlands from development... Reducing our dependence on petroleum based products... Protecting wildlife habitat throughout Washington... Eliminating dangerous toxic chemicals from everyday products... And looking to Eastern Washington, our State must demand that the federal government clean up the radioactive waste at Hanford and prevent our state from becoming a national nuclear waste dump.  Together, we can do it!

Your Support Is Needed!

Please consider making a contribution today to help us get out our positive message about local, community values and a proven record of leadership and public service.  With so much at stake, will you please join our campaign--any amount helps!
